In 2014, Blizzard released its premiere online card game experience known as Hearthstone. The game took the expansive lore of the Warcraft series and compacted it into a familiar trading card game (aka “TCG”) setting, incorporating the same characters, elements, and relics. Since its debut, the game has exploded in popularity, building its reputation among TCGs and their enthusiasts around the world.

Enter Red Bull eSports: lovers of all things esports and active supporters of Hearthstone. The company is hosting an invitational event on smash.gg this weekend with a $10K+ prize pool and four invited teams consisting of three players each. The four teams will battle it out in a best of five round robin format, with the Top 2 playing one additional best of five finals match.

The four teams participating are as follows:

Tempo Storm (returning champions)

  • Andrey “Reynad” Yanyuk
  • Haiyun “Eloise” Tang
  • Jeffrey “TrumpSC” Shih

Luminosity

  • Keaton “Chakki” Gill
  • Paul “Zalae” Nemeth
  • Musahil “Muzzy” Islam

Team PogChamp

  • Jeremy “DisguisedToast”
  • Brian “Brian Kibler” Kibler
  • Julien “Cydonia” Perrault

Team Goat

  • Haiwei “Adwcta” Wang
  • Yan “Merps” Gao
  • Rumay “Hafu” Wang

Besides the event being an invitational, it’s special in another way: there will be a draft streamed live, where the players will create their decks. This will happen before the event and will be streamed via the streamers’ own personal Twitch.Tv streams, allowing spectators to follow along. This begins at 10:30 AM Pacific on Saturday morning. Once the drafts are complete and the decks have been locked, official matches will begin on the Red Bull eSports Twitch channel at 12 PM Pacific, found here: https://www.twitch.tv/redbullesports

The software being used for the event is custom-made by us at smash.gg, offering an assortment of cool new features to players, tournament organizers, and the general public. We’ve decided to push our involvement in Hearthstone and other TCGs, better equipping our website to suit your needs. A list of features included that will be showcased in the Red Bull event can be broken down into two categories: Stats and Deck Creation

Stats

For the event, we wanted to showcase a number of statistics (stats) that are imperative, informative, and exciting. Anyone following at the event or at home can view them, so long as you check the tournament page’s “Events” tab. Here, you can see a “Stats” tab listed under Hearthstone. Click it and a number of stats will be listed, including:

  • Most Used Class
  • Most Brought Class
  • Class vs. Class Win Percent
(Overall as well as whether they had the Coin or not)

Below are a few examples of the stats:

(Shown above you can see the “Most Used Class”)
(Shown above you can see the overall “Win Rate” percentage)

With these, some important conclusions can be reached: Which class seems to be the most popular? Is that class actually winning the most overall? These questions can be better answered using the stats we’ve listed!

Deck Creation

Our deck creation feature, as mentioned above, was custom made for the event. Soon it will be publicly available for all to use, so stay tuned for more information! Once released and if you’re listed as an “Admin” on smash.gg, you’ll be able to use the “Match Modal” to be able to do a wide assortment of actions. This allows you to do all of your basic deck management and it’s only the beginning.

You can see some of the features in action below:

(Shown above is a visualization of adding a deck, searching for a class, and bulk adding cards)
(Shown above is a visualization of adding a deck, selecting a class and adding cards individually)

This simplifies and streamlines the process of setting up your deck. Beyond that, anyone will be able to view the deck list thanks to the feature. Follow along and see what strategies the pros use and consider how you could change your own decks in the process!

Smash.gg is proud to jump further into the TCG market and we’re thrilled to have Red Bull using our software. We’re building off our previous success with TCGs and building a greater understanding and appreciation for the genre. Be sure to follow us here on our blog for upcoming releases, and watch Red Bull’s Invitational to see the software firsthand!
